When do you know enough about your business, or anything else for that matter, that you can relax and feel you have all the skills required to be successful? Certainly the Romans thought they knew everything about ruling the known world just before the fall of the Roman Empire. Dinosaurs thought they were the kings of the planet and you know what happened to them. The Roman Empire failed to adapt to change and the dinosaurs died off because they could not adapt to their new environment. Are you evolving? Are you changing? Are you growing?
A successful person is always learning. They are always open to finding ways to make what they do better, more efficient, and more effective. You have heard the saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. The Dinosaurs and the Romans were heard saying that just before the end. Successful organizations and successful people are always learning and “making it better” while never forgetting about being brilliant at the basics … the stuff that brought them to the party in the first place. This balance of never forgetting the skills that made you successful in the first place and balancing the need to always be learning and improving is necessary in order for anyone to stay on top of their game. This is the evolution theory in the long-term care insurance (LTCi) business. This could also be applied to any business in American or even the state or federal government.
Today we have long-term care insurance specialists who are successfully meeting, helping and selling clients using the computer. Just a few years ago many of us would have said that was impossible … you had to drive and meet with clients at the kitchen table. Now, with so many people in their 50’s and 60’s who are very comfortable with technology, using this tool to increase activity and “see” even more people is essential. If you are not open to this you may be passed by as others gain that skill. Some evolve and adapt … others will wither on the vine.
Another example is rate software. Some agents don’t like to use computers or software at all. Instead they use “rate cards”. Others just come out with “spreadsheets”. If you are not using Stratecision and do not have your own copy of the software on your laptop then someone who uses it in their practice may pass you by. You must use it properly … not to spreadsheet, but to use as a closing tool and take away the “shopping” objection. If you choose to push forward and evolve with the market your competitors will still bite at your heels but if you stop and grow stagnant they will swallow you whole.
If you are in another business, or in government, there may be tools that you have avoided to use. It could be you avoid these tools since you have “always done it” one way and it has always worked in the past. This is a sure sign that failure could be around the corner.
Every organization should have resources you should use. Our our agents this is something they have plenty of … resources. Simply put, if you don’t take advantage of the learning resources ACSIA Long Term Care provides you, in the end you lose out. Things like conference calls, phone jams, speaking with your RSD or field marketer, and reading your emails can help you stay on the cutting edge of the LTCi industry. Some people talk change, other cause it. You can’t just talk about it – you have to execute your plan.
If you are in the long-term care industry you should consider the resources we provide to make our people successful. We want our agents to evolve. If you are in another industry you should find a company that provides the resources to grow. Many companies stay still and they die off. Perhaps you should look elsewhere or consider changing industries.
